The Duke of Palma de Mallorca Summoned to Testify in Court

Don Inaki Urdangarin, the husband of HRH Infanta Cristina, has been summoned by the Balearic Islands Superior Court of Justice to testify on February 6th as part of an ongoing investigation into the misuse of public funds.

The investigation surrounds claims that the Duke misused public funds given to the Nóos Institute, which he headed as President until 2006. The Nóos Institute – which was meant to be a non-profit foundation – has been at the centre of an ongoing corruption scandal. In November 2011, the Duke issued a short press release where he stated that he ‘stands ready to proclaim his innocence in the case’.

Don Inaki later expressed that he was sorry for any damage being done to the Crown and that his business interests had nothing to do with the Spanish Royal Family.

Last month it was announced that the Duke of Palma de Mallorca had been suspended from performing royal duties by the Palace. In 2009, the Duchess and Duke of Palma de Mallorca and their children moved to Washington DC, where the Duke took up a postion with the Spanish communications provider ‘Telefónica’.
