HRH The Duke of Edinburgh is currently recovering from heart surgery at Papworth Cardiothoracic Hospital in Cambridgeshire, England, after he was admitted there last night, local time.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the Duke had been admitted to the hospital after having chest pains while at the Royal Family’s Sandringham House estate. Prince Philip was flown to the hospital in a helicopter.

Doctors at the hospital, renowned for its cardiothoracic facilities, discovered that the 90-year-old Duke had a blocked coronary artery, and inserted a stent to open up the artery and restore blood flow. A Palace spokesperson described the surgery as “minimally invasive”, and said that the Duke will remain in hospital for a short period, under doctors’ observation. It is unknown if he will rejoin the Royal Family for tomorrow’s Christmas Day celebrations, including the traditional church service at St Mary Magdalene’s.
