Margrethe II Celebrates 40 Years on the Throne in January 2012

2012 marks the 40th jubilee of Queen Margrethe II on the throne and it will be celebrated officially from 13 January till 15 January 2012.

Queen Margrethe of Denmark became the Queen upon the death of her father, King Frederik IX, on 14 January 1972. It was formally announced on 15 January.

Queen Margrethe was born on 16 April 1940 to King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid of Denmark, née Princess of Sweden. She was later joined by younger sisters, Fürstin Benedikte of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg [who is married to Fürst Richard] and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece [who is married to King Constantine].

Queen Margrethe married Count Henri de Laborde de Monpezat on 10 June 1967. They have two sons, Crown Prince Frederik [who is married to Crown Princess Mary, née Donaldson. They have four children: Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine] and Prince Joachim [who is married to Princess Marie, née Cavallier. They have one son, Prince Henrik and are expecting their second child together. Prince Joachim also has two sons, Prince Nikolai and Prince Felix, with his former wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, née Manley].

The jubilee festivities will start on January 13 with a reception hosted by the parliament. On 14 January, there will be an official reception at city hall. The Queen and Prince-Consort will arrive there by coach. After the reception, the Royal couple will appear on the balcony. At night there will be a gala performance at “Danmarks Radios Koncerthus.” January 15 will start with a Counsel of State meeting. Following the meeting, the changing of the Guard at Amalienborg will take place and the Royal family will appear on the balcony. Then there will be a service in Christiansborg Palace Chapel. At night there will be a galadinner with the Royal family, members of the goverment of Denmark, family members and foreign Royal guests.
