THAT Hat Fetches £81,000 at Auction
The much talked about, largely unliked hat that sat atop Princess Beatrice of York’s head at the April 29 wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge has sold at auction for just over £81,000.
Described as a “gravity-defying hat”, the Philip Treacy creation was listed on eBay last week, with the auction closing yesterday with a winning bid of exactly £81,100.01. It is unknown who the buyer was, but the Princess said she hoped the winner “has as much fun with the hat as I have.”
The money raised will be divided between two charities – UNICEF UK’s The Little Bee Initiative, and Children in Crisis; as chosen by the 22-year-old daughter of the Duke of York.
When Princess Beatrice stepped on to the red carpet in front of Westmister Abbey on April 29 wearing the hat, viewers watching the event live on television were perplexed by her choice of headgear (standing next to sister Eugenie only slightly helped reduce the attention focused squarely on her forehead). Facebook group Princess Beatrice’s ridiculous Royal Wedding hat was quickly set up, and has over 143,000 “Likes”.
