Denmark’s Crown Princess Mary yesterday performed her first public engagement after the christening of her four-month-old twins, Vincent and Josephine. The christening on April 14th was the first time the Crown Princess had been seen publically since leaving the hospital in the middle of January after she gave birth on January 8th.

As patron of the Danish Cancer Society, Crown Princess Mary opened the “Turn down the sun between 12 and 3” campaign conference at Copenhagen’s Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. The campaign is held annually by the Society in an attempt to raise awareness for skin cancer, and yesterday was the fifth consecutive year the Princess has opened the conference. The event also doubled as the closure of the first ‘International Conference on UV and Skin Cancer Prevention.’

Wearing navy pants and a white shirt under a grey patterned jacket, the Crown Princess addressed an audience of around 200 people about her own experiences with the sun. “I grew up in Australia with sun safe campaigns like ‘Slip Slop Slap’ – slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat…[a] long-running campaign proved to be extremely successful as an effective way to communicate the dangers and preventive measures that should be taken in the sun,” Princess Mary told the audience, before discussing the impact skin cancer has on Denmark, which is not classed as a ‘sunny country’ – “9,000 Danes every year [are affected by skin cancer].”

The 39-year-old also praised the efforts Danes have taken over the past four years to reduce their harmful sun exposure.
