Crown Prince Willem-Alexander attends UN World Water Day Conference

On March 21 and 22, Prince Willem-Alexander was in Cape Town, South Africa on the occasion of the celebration of World Water Day 2011. The theme this year was Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge.

In Cape Town, the Prince of Orange was present at several events like the final of the ‘Moola for Amanzi “, where five teams of talented young professionals and students presented business concepts to a panel of water experts to demonstrate their innovative solutions for water related problems.

Furthermore, the Prince ran along the Walk for Love of Water, an initiative of the City of Cape Town. In Cape Town the Prince had meetings on “Water and Disaster” and with the General Assembly of the Global Water Operators Partnerships Alliance.

The United Nations World Water Day was established in 1994 to “call attention to the world’s water and to set people’s attention to sufficient and clean water for everyone in the world.” The Prince is President of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB). This advisory group advises the UN Secretary-General on measures to be taken to achieve the Millennium Development Goals for water and sanitation.
