Queen Elizabeth Opens New British Legion Headquarters

HM The Queen visited south London on Friday, February 27, to open the new headquarters for the Royal British Legion. While at the new location, The Queen met with veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and their families who have been helped by the Legion.

The Royal British Legion is a charitable organization that supplies aid to British military personnel who are serving or have served in branches of the British Armed Forces and their families. The are perhaps best known for their annual Poppy Appeal, during which they sell small paper poppies to raise millions of pounds for their charity efforts. The poppies are traditionally worn in memory of those who died during the First World War, and the image is associated with John McCrae’s World War I poem, “In Flanders Field.”

The Royal British Legion occupied space on Pall Mall from 1947 until moving to their new location at Haig House in Southwark. The Queen toured the new facilities as a part of the official engagement.
