Swedish Royal Events in January

Despite participating in a state visit, the Swedish Royal Family was back at work doing royal engagements in Sweden.

King Carl Gustav & Queen Silvia;
On the 22^nd of January, King Gustaf and Queen Silvia attended the Malmö Amaranth’s 200th anniversary. The evening began with a reception at the governor’s residence before the festivities continued in the town hall. The King gave a speech and talked about the background of the Amaranth words.

On the 25^th of January, Queen Silva handed out the grants from the Queen Silvia of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation. The ceremony took place in Princess Sibylla’s Apartments at the Royal Palace and there were six proud recipients who received awards from the Queen. The Queen established the fund for research on children and disability in the year of her fiftieth birthday. The Fund distributes annually provides funding that may be made by preferably students admitted to postgraduate studies in universities and colleges in the country. Each year a certain priority research area, 2010 was the “Physical and psychological well-being disorders in children and adolescents”.

Also on January 25th, the King and Crown Princess Victoria met representatives of the organization Baltic Sea Action Group (BSAG). They met Secretary-General Ilkka Herlin and ombudsman Mathias Bergman, who together with Anders Hagelberg from the State Department, came to talk about BSAG and its development. February 2010 saw the first Baltic Sea Summit in Helsinki. The aim is to save the Baltic Sea, which is seriously affected by pollution.

On the 26th of January, the King received four new foreign ambassadors at the Royal Palace at formal audiences. The ambassadors came from Ecuador, Syria, Qatar and Ghana. At the ceremony, the Ambassadors left their credentials, a document from the respective head of state to King that after the handover gives them the formal right to work in Sweden. The solemn audiences follow an ancient ceremony. Ambassadors are fetched from the Royal Mews at the State Department and driven to the Royal Palace. A fifteen minute private conversation between the King and the ambassador takes place.

In the evening of the 26th of January, the King and Queen attending the Castle Church and listened to Young Music at Castle. The concert offered choral music, sound adventure and string quartet with Adolf Fredrik’s Music School and Saphirkvartetten from the Stuttgart Academy of Music. Young Music at the Castle is part of Music at the Castle led by Mats Liljefors. It was King Gustav VI Adolf, who in 1970, invited Mats Liljefors to give concerts at the Royal Palace and it soon became a great success. Music at Castle celebrated its 40th year in 2010.

Crown Princess Couple, Princess Madeleine, Prince Carl-Philip;
26^th of January; Prince Carl-Philip visited the Swedish stand during the 2011 Bocuse d’Or world final at Lyon Eurexpo.

28^{th of} January; Prince Daniel hasn’t been seen a lot lately since Christmas and this is possible because he has started studying physiology at the Karolinska Institute in Solna, beginning on the 10th of January. Bertil Ternert, the new chief of court, tells that Princess Victoria is supporting her husband in his studies. Karolinska Institute is a medical university.

29^th of January; Princess Madeleine has made an appearance over in the States. With a new romance of the cards, Madeleine attended the 54^th International Red Cross Ball at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida.

31^st of January; Princess Victoria handed out the Bertil Hult Prize, which goes to a Swedish elementary school that works admirably to help students with dyslexia.
