Prince Albert rides on a camel to see the Pyramids of Giza

His Serene Highness the Prince Albert II of Monaco has never been one to shirk a physical challenge! As he proceeds into what will be his 53rd year of life, and the fifth year of his reign, he chose to do so not on the soles of his Italian shoes or behind the wheel of his hybrid car, but rather on the hump of a camel!

It is true! The Prince is in Cairo, Egypt along with his fiancee, Charlene Wittstock. This was the mode by which the pair visited the three pyramids of Giza.

Reflecting on Monaco’s past, present, and future

Per tradition, on the eve of the New Year, the Prince addressed the people of Monaco with a message of hope and wishes. He expressed his feeling that it is important to continue to show solidarity with close relations at home and abroad. He said that the crisis will inevitably present ethical questions, which will demand that spirit of solidarity. He also said that he is ever dedicated to environmental sustainability and economic recovery. For the economy, he continued, they, as a people, must work together, using intelligence, to construct a more harmonious and fair system.

He mentioned the upcoming centenary of the Constitution of 1911. It reminds him of the long history of close relationship between the Prince and the Monegasques, undisturbed even during hard times. Each generation has added a stone to the works of the previous generation. While there is always an active desire to improve things, the institutions remain in place, built of cement and in which the Principality is inscribed. Monaco’s projects of the future, he added, will erase neither the past nor the present, but will prolong them.

Finally, his marital plans. On July 1st and 2nd, the population of Monaco will accompany him and “Charlene” in the celebration of their sacred union. A new chapter of Monegasque history will thus be opened! The path ahead will be formed with the desires of both the young and the old of Monaco. And at last, his closing remark: “With each one among you who live in our country or make it radiate abroad, I repeat: Very Happy Year 2011.”
