Princess Letizia Visits Children’s Hospital
Princess Letizia visited today the Sondureta hospital in Palma de Mallorca, where she had the opportunity to learn about the work that the Medical Smile Association performs in infant hospitals.
The principal intention of this association is to bring some laughter to children who are spending some difficult moments in hospitals. This is done by introducing professional and specialist clowns in order that, through humour, they can collaborate in the therapeutic process.
The Medical Smile Association draws on the experience and methodology of the well known hospitals of Le Rire Médecin (Paris) and Clown Care Unit (New York). The association’s clowns make year-round visits to the paediatric departments of hospitals in the Balear Community.
Some minutes before the Princess met with the children she had quite a scare. It seems that a man threw himself at a delegation accompanying the Princess, yelling: “Death to the king!” The security service detained the man in order to “avoid a risky situation”. The news report that the man is a 55-year-old Argentine citizen, and is undergoing psychiatric treatment. The Royal House has described this as a “minor incident” and told the press that after that the Princess spent a really great time with the children, watching the clowns perform.
