Sweden’s Princess Christina Reveals Cancer Battle
In today’s editon of Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet, Princess Christina – an elder sister of King Carl XVI Gustaf – revealed that she has been fighting breast cancer since the Northern summer.
“I have had surgery three times, and have undergone both chemotherapy and radiation therapy,” Princess Christina told the newspaper. The surgeries and treatments were undertaken at the Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm over the summer and autumn. “I am grateful that Sweden is a world leader in this area,” said the 67-year-old.
Princess Christina’s illness was kept quiet by the royal family, and was un-detectable during the wedding festivities of the Princess’ niece, Crown Princess Victoria, in June.
Breast cancer affects approximately 7,000 individuals in Sweden each year, and approximately 1.3 million women worldwide are diagnosed with one of the five stages of breast cancer. It is the second leading cause of death amongst women.
