Jordan’s King Opens 16th Parliament Session

On November 28, 2010 King Abdullah II of Jordan inaugurated the first ordinary session of the 16th Parliament in Amman with a Speech from the Throne. The Monarch dissolved the previous lower house of Parliament in November 2009, two years before the completion of its four-year term, after media allegations about corruption among MPs.

During his speech the King said that the Parliament could “amend” a temporary election law “as necessary to render this central legislation more conducive to advancing our democratic reforms, and adopt it as a permanent law.”

Abdullah II also reiterated Jordan’s support for Palestinians: “We will do all we can to help them put an end to occupation, to lift the injustice, and to establish their independent state on their national soil, with East Jerusalem as its capital, in accordance with the Arab Peace Initiative and international law, and within a regional context that ensures comprehensive peace”.

Among the guests were some members of the Royal Family as Queen Rania, the King’s mother, Princess Muna, Prince Faisal, Prince Hashim, Prince Talal, Prince Ra’ad, Princess Basma, Princess Sara Al Faisal and Princess Ghida Talal.
