King & Queen Mark Karolinska Institutet’s Anniversary
Last Friday, August 27th, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia attended festivities to mark the 200th anniversary of the Karolinska Institutet, one of Europe’s largest medical universitites, at the Stockholm City Hall.
The King and Queen were joined by Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, who were undertaking their second official engagement together since their June 19th wedding.
The Karolinska Institutet was founded in 1810 as a medical training centre for army surgeons after the Finnish War. It’s original campus was built on the Kungsholmen island, west of Stockholm, before being moved to Solna. The Institutet focuses on medical education and research. The Karolinska Institutet Hospital is associated with the Institutet, and was the location of Crown Princess Victoria’s birth in 1977.
