Princess Caroline and World Refugee Day

There was plenty of speculation as to whether Princess Caroline would attend the highly anticipated royal wedding in Sweden. Royal watchers everywhere longed to know if she would attend, and if yes, would she have a “date,” or just her brother to escort her? Even the most conservative royal watchers, skeptical of the truth of her divorce from the Prince of Hanover, seemed resigned to the unlikelihood that he would escort her.

Alas, any hopes of the Princess taking a seat in Stockholm’s Royal Cathedral were dashed. The day before the wedding, she kept her feet firmly planted in Monaco for the sake of World Refugee Day, which actually was two days later. The agency of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees unleashed a worldwide chain of events and activities throughout the weekend. The celebrity Goodwill Ambassadors, led by Angelina Jolie, were out in force. The actual WRD, Sunday, June 20, culminated in the spotlighting of New York’s Empire State Building in UNHCR blue from sunset.

Monaco’s Princess Caroline acted on behalf of the Principality to witness the sealing of Monaco’s partnership with the UNHCR. The Department of External Relations, via the Office of International Cooperation, organized the the World Refugee Day Conferences at the Fairmont Hotel. The Princess opened the conferences with a speech, after which there was a video message from Antonio Guterres, the UNHCR himself. Francisco Galindo Velez representated the UNHCR. Franck Biancheri, Monaco’s Government Counselor for External Relations, joined Velez in the signing of the partnership while the Princess looked on from behind.

The Princess opted a very flattering, but no-nonsense pale blue skirt skirt and matching belted jacket. Letting her hair fall naturally around her collar and shoulders, she wore minimal makeup and jewelry. Her one fashionable extremity was in the shoes: Two-inch peep-toe heels, adorned with panda stripes and marked by the famous red soles of Christian Louboutin. (Gallery from PurePeople)
