Princess Ragnhild turns 80

Today Princess Ragnhild Mrs Lorentzen of Norway, the oldest sister of King Harald V, celebrates her 80th birthday together with her family and friends at a private birthday party at the palace in Oslo.

Princess Ragnhild was born on June 9th 1930 as the first child of of King Olav V and Crown Princess Märtha. The Princess spent most time of her childhood in the Skaugum Estate near Oslo. In 1940, due to the German invasion in Norway, the Royal Family, the Government and most members of the Norwegian Parliament had to escape from Norway. Crown Princess Märtha and the three children, Princess Ragnhild, Princess Astrid and Prince Harald, first escaped to Sweden. After a few months they travelled to the USA where they lived in the outskirts of Washington DC until the war was over in 1945.

On 15 May 1953 Princess Ragnhild married the commoner Mr Erling Sven Lorentzen in Asker Church. After her marriage Princess Ragnhild got the title Her Highness Princess Ragnhild Mrs Lorentzen. Neither Princess Ragnhild nor her sister Princess Astrid, who also married a commoner, are entitled to succeed to the Norwegian Throne.

Princess Ragnhild and her husband moved to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, where they are still living today. The couple has 3 children: Haakon Lorentzen (1954), Ingeborg Ribeiro (1957) and Ragnhild Lorentzen (1968).
