Princess Lalla Salma opens the 16th Fez Festival of World Sacred Music

Princess Lalla Salma chaired on Friday in Fez the opening ceremony of the 16th Fez Festival of World Sacred Music held under the patronage of King Mohammed VI by the Spirit of Fez Foundation under the theme “initiatory journey”. Princess Lalla Salma accompanied by Bernadette Chirac and sister of Cambodia’s King Princess Norodom Bopha Devi followed the Festival’s inaugural concert performed by the Royal Ballet of Cambodia.

The theme of the Festival reflects the principles of tolerance respect and understanding which mark the Fez Festival of World Sacred Music. Eager to celebrate the cultures of the world the Festival’s program features music performances exhibitions Sufi nights as well as debates and forums scheduled as part of the “meetings of Fez”. Several groups representing traditional arts are attending the event mainly the Apsaras, the goddess dancers of Royal Ballet of Cambodia, the Gotipuas children dancers of Hindu temples in Orissa, the Zanzibar Sufis representatives of Sufism from the Indian Ocean and the Blind Boys of Alabama.

The event will be an occasion to celebrate Al-Quds the holy city of three religions through the Baghdad Jewish music of Jordi Savall. Other singers are also invited namely icon of Persian music Shahram Nazeri, Sabah Fakhri, Dhafer Youssef, Vijay Ghate, Talvin Singh and Camille.

The “meetings of Fez” will be held at the Batha museum under the theme:”initiatory journey: the mystery of revelation”. Debates will touch on five sub-themes: “inner journey”, “journey of scriptures”, “pilgrimage”, “exile” and “mythical journey”.

Later on Friday night Lalla Salma attended at the royal palace of Fez a dinner offered by King Mohammed VI in Honour of figures invited to Fez Festival. The dinner was notably attended by Bernadette Chirac the sister of Cambodia’s King Princess Norodom Bopha Devi, French Culture Minister Frederic Mitterand, Director of the Royal Ballet of Cambodia Prince Sisowath Tesso and Chairwoman of the Greater Casablanca’s regional committee of of Lalla Salma association for the fight against cancer.

Fez Festival will run until June 12.
