Funeral of Prince Edouard Lobkowicz

The funeral of HSH Prince Edouard von Lobkowicz, who died last Friday in Paris, aged 83, took place this morning at 10am in St. Thomas d’Aquin Church in Paris; the Mass was conducted by Father Jean-Charles Nault, Abbot of St. Wandrille.

The ceremony was attended by the immediate family of the late Prince: his wife Princess Françoise, and their two surviving children, Prince Charles-Henri and Princess Marie-Gabrielle, P.S.D.P.

Among the mourners were several European Royals: Prince Lorenz of Belgium, Archduke of Austria-Este, Prince Jean of Luxembourg and his wife Princess Diane, Prince Guillaume and Princess Sibilla of Luxembourg, Prince Nikolaus and Princess Margaretha of Liechtenstein, Archduchess Anna Gabriele of Austria, Archduke Carl Christian and Archduchess Marie Astrid of Austria, Archduke Simeon of Austria, the Duchess of Orleans, Princess Chantal of France, Princess Beatrice of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, Prince Charles-Emmanuel and Princess Constance of Bourbon-Parma, Princess Helene of Yugoslavia, Princess Napoleon.

Prince Edouard was born on 12 June 1926 in New York, the eldest son of Prince Eduard von Lobkowicz, one of the most ancient and prominent Bohemian noble families, and his wife Princess Anita, née Lihme; he had a younger brother, Prince George (1928-1950) and a younger sister, Princess Anita Olga, married to Count Charles-Louis de Cossé-Brissac.

He served in the US Army from 1944 to 1947, then he graduated at Harvard and later he attended Sorbonne University in Paris; he worked in the financial field.

Prince Edouard married, civilly in Besson on 11 Dec 1959 and religiously in Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris on 7 Jan 1960, HRH Princess Marie Françoise of Bourbon-Parma, eldest daughter of the then Prince Xavier and his wife Princess Madeleine; Prince Xavier became in 1974 Head of the Ducal Family and titular Duke of Parma.

Edouard and Françoise became parents of four children, three sons (Edouard-Xavier, Robert, Charles-Henri) and a daughter, Marie-Gabrielle. Their firstborn son, Edouard-Xavier, was murdered in Paris on 27 April 1984, while the second son, Robert, died of brain tumor in Lebanon in 1988; their daughter Marie Gabrielle joined the Little Sisters of the Poor in the USA.

Prince Edouard and Princess Françoise lived partly in France, in Paris and in Grainville-Ymauville, where they owned a castle, and partly in Lebanon, where they were active supporters of Lebanese Phalange and where the Prince was in charge of the charities of the Order of Malta.

Prince Edouard died in Paris, on 2 April 2010.
