Romania has a new Prince

From today, Romania has a new Prince; he is Nicholas de Roumanie Medforth-Mills, grandson of former King Michael I and third in the line of succession to the (defunct) Romanian throne.

Nicholas turns today 25 years old; therefore, according to his Grandfather’s wishes and to the Statute of the Romanian Royal Family, he takes the title of His Royal Highness Prince Nicholas of Romania.

This decision was taken in 2005 by King Michael and later was confirmed in the new “Fundamental Rules Of The Royal Family Of Romania” (PDF file from the site of the Royal Family), signed in December 2007 by the King, where he stated that Nicholas “shall assume the title, style and rank of Prince of Romania and Royal Highness” on his 25^th birthday or at the death of King Michael – who anyway is still alive.

The Statute, replaces the 1884 Law of the Statute, also changes the succession law from agnatic primogeniture to male-preference primogeniture succession, and prevents members of foreign Royal and Princely Houses from succeeding to the Romanian Throne; as a result this Statute strips King Michael’s cousin, Fürst Friedrich Wilhelm of Hohenzollern, and his heirs from their succession rights to the Romanian Throne, granted them by 1884 Law of the Statute and by the defunct 1923 Constitution.

Since King Michael has no sons but five daughters, the eldest of them, Princess Margarita, is the Heir to the Headship of the Royal Family.

Prince Nicholas was born in Geneva, Switzerland, on 1 April 1985 as Nicholas Michael de Roumanie Medforth-Mills, the son of Princess Elena of Romania, herself the second daughter of King Michael and Queen Anne, and her first husband, the late Dr. Robin Medforth-Mills. Nicholas has a sister, Karina; their parents divorced in 1991, and Princess Elena remarried seven years later. Soon after Nicholas’ birth, his parents moved to Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, where he grow up; he attended Shiplake College in Henley-on-Thames.

Prince Nicholas is the third in the line of succession to the Romanian Throne, and also the heir presumptive, since his aunt Crown Princess Margarita has no issue.

In an interview in 2008 to a Romanian newspaper Nicholas stated that if Romanian people asked him to become their King, he would not refuse. Since the same years Nicholas is often present in public life, attending public events and taking part to the visits in the Country paid by his uncle Prince Radu (Princess Margarita’s husband) as Special Representative of the Government.
