Dutch Royals Participate in NL DOET

As they do each year, the Dutch Royal Family participated in NL DOET over the weekend (the event formerly known as Make A Difference Day). This year, the royals were all in one place – a playground in Nieuwegein.

Arriving in the morning, each family member was given their own task to complete. Queen Beatrix, Prince Constantijn, Princess Marilène and Princess Annette were in charge of repainting a faded mural – a task brought out family squabbles. Princess Marilène accidentally knocked over a bottle of turpentine, and jokingly said, “Well, at least there won’t be any weeds.” Queen Beatrix and Princess Annette teamed up to take on Prince Constantijn’s need to stick to the design and colour inside the lines – Beatrix wanted “more creativity”, and so added yellow to the apple trees while her youngest son had his back turned.

Princesses Máxima and Aimée were also painting – Máxima a wall and Aimée parking signs. “No wrong turns,” Aimée laughed while painting the corners of the giant ‘P’. Princes Maurits, Bernhard and Floris painted benches and boards, while Prince Willem-Alexander and Princess Laurentien got down to the nitty-gritty work of building fences and sanding down trains. The future King assisted two other volunteers, Dick and Emanuel, to build a fence to prevent children from going down to the bank.
