2009 Royal Variety Performance
HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of Edinburgh attended the 2009 Royal Variety Performance on December 7th, in Blackpool.
The star-studded bash, hosted by comedian Peter Kay, included performances by Bette Midler, Canadian crooner Michael Bublé, singer Mika and the winner of X-Factor Alexandra Burke. But it was two American starlets who stole the show, through their risqué and “outlandish” performances – Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga. While appearing somewhat more demure when meeting the Queen earlier in the evening (who herself was looking wonderful in a black evening gown and shawl designed by Angela Kelly), Cyrus changed into a pair of hotpants for the rendition of her hit Party in the USA.
Lady Gaga went the opposite way however, donning a red latex Elizabeth I-inspired gown, paired with statement red eye make-up. She closed the charity gala, which benefits the Entertainment Artistes’ Benevolent Fund – a patronage of the Queen’s – hoisted nine metres above the stage playing Speechless on a piano.
The Royal Variety Performance is attended each year by a senior member of the royal family, in the past years the attending member has alternated between Queen Elizabeth and HRH The Prince of Wales.
