Crown Prince Frederik Elected to IOC

Crown Prince Frederik has been elected to the International Olympic Committee, as the representative for Denmark. The Prince was elected by a majority vote of 77 to 9, plus six absentee ballots. The election took place in Copenhagen at the 121st IOC Congress.

His election has already been celebrated in Denmark, with the President of the Danish National Olympic Committee, Nils Nygaard, congratulating the Prince and stating what this means for the Danish NOC: “With the Crown Prince’s membership of the IOC, Denmark can ensure continued influence in the Olympic movement. I’m both delighted and pleased, not only on behalf of the Crown Prince, but also for the Danish sporting movement.”

Prince Frederik announced his candidacy for the membership back in October 2006, and is the eighth Dane to be elected since the IOC began in the late nineteenth century. HRH joins fellow royals HRH The Grand Duke of Luxembourg, HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco, HRH The Prince of Orange, HRH The Princess Royal and HRH Princess Haya bint Al Hussein as an IOC member.

Six new members were elected to the IOC in total, including Prince Frederik. The others were Richard Peterkin (St Lucia), Habu Ahmed Gumel (Nigeria), Lydia Nsekera (Burundi) and Göran Petersson (Sweden). IOC President Jacques Rogge was also re-elected for a second and final four-year term.
