Emperor Akihito, Empress Michiko and Crown Prince Naruhito received French President Francois Hollande and his partner in Tokyo on June 7, 2013. Hollande arrived in Japan on June 6 for three days of talks, hoping to seal deals on nuclear co-operation and in the aviation sector, on the first state visit by a French president in 17 years.

The Imperial Household Agency said Monday it has reduced the number of households in the Imperial family by one, following the passing of Prince Tomohito of Mikasa a year ago. The household led by the late prince has been integrated into the one led by his father, Prince Mikasa, 97, the late Emperor Hirohito’s brother. On Tuesday, the Imperial Religious Ceremonies commemorating the 200th anniversary of the death of Empress Go-Sakuramachi (1740-1813) were held both in Tokyo and Kyoto (the Empress was the last female monarch in Japan). Princess Akiko attended the ceremony held at the mausoleum of the Empress in Kyoto.
