Japan’s Princess Aiko Turns 20

On December 1st, Princess Aiko of Japan turned celebrated her 20th birthday. The Princess, only child of Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako, was born on 1 December 2001 at the Imperial Household Agency Hospital.
Today, Sunday December 5, Princess Aiko attended the coming-of-age ceremonies at the Imperial Palace in Tokyo.
As part of the ceremonies, the Princess in the morning visited the Three Palace Sanctuaries in the Imperial Palace to pay respect to the Imperial family’s ancestors and deities. Then Princess Aiko received the Grand Cordon of the Order of the Precious Crown from his father, the Emperor.
Afterwards the Princess went to the Sento Kari Gosho residence where she met with her grandparents, Emperor Emeritus Akihito and Empress Emerita Michiko.
In the afternoon Princess Aiko, along with the Emperor and the Empress, in the Houou no Ma hall, received well-wishes from members of the Imperial Family and members of the three branches of the government.
For the occasion Princess Aiko worn a white floor-lenght gown with a matched jacket and for the first time she worn a tiara previously owned by the former Princess Nori, her paternal aunt.
Princess Aiko is currently studying at the Department of Japanese Language and Literature, Faculty of Letters, at the Gakushuin University.
