Please don't misunderstand my comment -- My post was not meant as criticism of the Scots -- I admire them greatly and find nothing wrong in their nationalistic pride. It is a reflection of their thirst for independence from the English and while I admire the English (as well as the Scots)...

It seems the Scots are determined to resurrect their national pride and identity by reclaiming their history independent of the English.

I could see that if slavery still existed in the British Empire, Queen Victoria may have been dismayed by this fact but I doubt that it would have made her hesitate to get married. She was madly in love with Albert and that would have been uppermost in her mind.

How wonderful. I enjoyed the biography of Princess Alice by Vickers. It would be incredible to be able to see her tomb in the church. She greatly admired the religious devotion of her aunts, Empress Alexandra and Grand Duchess Elizabeth.

Is it because a woman takes her husband's status and can be elevated (or lowered) when she marries? What I mean is when the daughter of a peer marries someone below her rank, doesn't she automatically take his rank? If so, then when a man is knighted, his wife takes his rank, but when a woman...

Nice article but I don't necessarily see it as an act by a subversive artist. As the article states near the end, the Tudors appeared to recycle wooden panels by painting over them. What better way than for Walsingham to show his distaste for Catholicism than by having his portrait painted...

:previous: I agree. Rather harsh assessment and false to boot! Victoria may not have been fond of infants and toddlers but I have never seen evidence that she hated her children. I think Albert scolded her for not being maternal when the children were very young.
